Fandom! What is it? How did it become a thing? Our concept of modern fandom can be traced back to early science fiction and fantasy fans and over time they have grown into the modern fandoms that we have today. Fandoms, and the media they spawn from, are something that I have been involved with for the majority of my life. Growing up they were a core part of me and they’ve taken a large part in shaping me into the person I am today. In these past years I’ve been very interested in the concept of fandom as a whole. There are these entire communities of people that stretch all over the world and incorporate such a variety of individuals. Fandom as a whole has formed its own culture and it is truly fascinating to look at. Whether you are solely looking at the internal workings of fandoms, one specific fandom, the social and cultural impact of fandom, or the way that fandoms interact with society, there is always something to be explored. Fandom has a rich history and spans over a variety of platforms, takes a variety of shapes, and is such an experience. The first of our modern fans used zines to communicate and spread their thoughts and creations, so for my degree project I used zines to explore and explain the world of fandom
